Procedure guideline for therapy of thyroid disease with (131)iodine.

چکیده
Oral administration of 131I has been a commonly accepted procedure for treatment of benign and malignant conditions of the thyroid since the 1940s. Physicians responsible for treating such patients should have an understanding of the clinical pathophysiology and natural history of the disease processes, should be familiar with alternate forms of therapy, and should be able to collaborate closely with other physicians involved in the management of the patient’s condition. The treating physician should either see patients in consultation with the physician assuming overall management of the patient’s condition or be prepared to assume that role. In the United States, the treating physician should be board certified in Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, or Radiation Oncology, or be able to document equivalent training, competency, and experience in the safe use and administration of therapeutic amounts of 131I. In Europe, the treating physician should be board certified in Nuclear Medicine or Radiation Oncology. Licensure to possess 131I and regulations regarding the release of patients treated with radioiodine vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Physicians engaged in therapy with 131I must be knowledgeable about and in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. The facility in which treatment is performed must have appropriate personnel, radiation safety equipment, and procedures available for waste handling and disposal, monitoring personnel for accidental contamination, and controlling spread of volatilized 131I.

In research institute for nuclear medicine (Tehran University of Medical Sciences) 50 patients with follicular thyroid carcinoma were evaluted retrospectively. The purpose of the study was assesment of the response of iodine-131 therapy. The best result were achieved when the patient treated with iodine-131 for the first time, in the 4th decade of life, with total thyroidectomy and no met...

Introduction: High-dose radioactive iodine therapy in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) may adversely affect the salivary gland function. This study is aimed to evaluate the effect of radioactive iodine (RAI) with dose of 100 mCi in DTC patients compared to lower doses of less than 30 mCi in hyperthyroid cases. Methods: Fifty four patients (13 men and 41 women) age: 42.3±14.3 (21-71) years w...

متن کاملTreatment’s results of hyperthyroid patients with Iodine-131 [Persian]
Introduction: Radioiodine (131I) is an effective and inexpensive alternative to surgery in the treatment of thyroid hyperfunction. The debate today concerns the maximum and minimum ablative doses, and factors leading to hypothyroidism. Patients & Method: 1035 hyperthyroid patients treated with weight-adjusted ablative doses of 131I were retrospectively assessed for ...

Background. The most appropriate therapy for papillary microcarcinoma (PMC) is controversial. Methods. We reviewed the therapy and outcome of 407 patients with PMC. Results. Three hundred-eighty patients underwent total thyroidectomy, and 349 patients received I-131 therapy. The median followup was 5.3 years. Forty patients developed recurrent disease. On univariate analysis, development of dis...
متن کاملEffect of administrated activity, admission number and TSH level on radiation retention curve of patients taking iodine-131 therapy for differentiated thyroid carcinoma: Looking beyond established regulations
Introduction: Retention of I-131 in the body of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) has a direct effect on therapeutic outcome of radioiodine therapy. There are several factors that may influence retention time of radioiodine in the body of these patients. In this study we are going to assess effects of administered radioiodine activity, serum thyroid stimulati...
